Back in November I posted about the trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War and claimed that

The Huntsman: Winter’s War will be a hot mess of a film but at least it will be a fun one!

Well I saw the movie yesterday and I thought I’d report back my thoughts and whether I was wrong or not. You’ll find the answer below the break.

The Short Version

I was wrong. While it is fun, it wasn’t as fun as I wanted it to be. To follow the cliché, all the best bits are in the trailer and they usual come in the form of Charlize Theron who continues her over the top performance from Snow White and The Huntsman.

The Performances

The rest of the main stars can’t match Theron‘s performance. The closest is Chris Hemsworth who smiles an award-winning smile throughout the whole thing and seems to be having as much fun as Theron. Jessica Chastain fights through a terrible Scottish accent towards a good performance but has missed the memo that Theron and Hemsworth received. Sadly Emily Blunt is actually acting by playing her ice queen as cold and lacking in emotion. While it is a good performance, I’d rather she was racing Theron to see who could eat the scenery faster!

The Snow White Problem

As I said in my discussion on the trailer, The Huntsman: Winter’s War take the best things from the first film (Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and the visual effects) and drops the rest of it. However, this causes a problem, as Snow White – the main character of the last film – has been given the boot and so the film has to work its way around this problem so the film is mostly voice over and individual scenes that don’t really link. Overall The Huntsman: Winter’s War is only slightly better than Snow White and The Huntsman and certainly the more enjoyable of the two films. I just wished they’d ignored all the Snow White stuff and just made a fantasy film starring the Huntsman and the Theron‘s evil queen.
