Disney’s D23 Expo took place over the weekend where they announced all sort of news about their upcoming film, tv and theme park projects. Last time I talked about one of their TV projects, Ms Marvel but today I want to look at one of their upcoming movies and why, for me, it was the most exciting announcement from the event.

What I'm Most Excited About From D23 2019

Some of you will think I’m about to start talking about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – especially as the D23 special look was released onto the web today. However, while the footage is enjoyable it doesn’t blow me away like the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens did.

Disney’s ‘live-action’ remakes of their classic animated films have been a very mixed bag being either awful (Alice in Wonderland), pointless (Beauty and the Beast) or trying to do something different (Maleficent). It is the latter which the upcoming Cruella prequel seems to be going for as this io9 description shows:

Also, Cruella, a live-action film about the early days of Cruella de Vil, who presumably was named Nice-ella before her heel turn, has just started filming, but we got some details. Listen to this: 1970s. Punk rock. And, yes, there are dalmatians. Uh. Uh. I don’t even know what to say about that. But Emma Stone is serving looks in this sneak peak

The idea of a 1970s Punk Rock Cruella movie sounds like it’ll be a fun hot mess of a film which even if it doesn’t work, will certainly be enjoyable.

Emma Stone

If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see what Emma Stone can do with the role of young Cruella. I really like Stone but every film I’ve seen her in she always seems to be giving the same performance. Whether that is Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spiderman or Abigail in The Favourite. Even if all she does is add extreme scenery chewing to her usual performance, it’ll hopefully feel a bit different. However, I have been burnt in the past!

What film discussed at D23 are you most looking forward to? Let me know in the comments below!
